The most important lesson to learn in College is the importance of getting involved and networking with others in your profession and starting before it’s too late. In April, I was lucky enough to attend the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists’ (AAPS) North Eastern Regional Discussion Group Conference held in Connecticut as an attendee while supporting our very own presenter, Dominique Pepe, a 4th year BSPS student. It was a wonderful experience and I urge all of you to attend our upcoming conference.

We started the day by supporting our fellow class mate, Dominique’s presentation. Her presentation assessed the penetration of antioxidants through the skin, while using sugar monoglycerides of varying lengths as penetration enhancers. She worked alongside Dr. Lopes, as well as Dr. Hass, recent BS graduate Jessica Phelps, and others. It was very interesting to see all the wonderful poster presentations from students just like me about critical and relevant studies that directly affect the topics that we learn and discuss in the classroom.

In addition to showing our school pride, I had the opportunity to network and connect with many pharmaceutical representatives and learn about upcoming pharmacy advancements. This research forum was intriguing, and was able to show where the future of pharmacy is headed.

I was also able to connect with other team leaders and fellow students of other regional pharmacy schools. These key players, the pharmaceutical representatives and the fellow student leaders are vital to a college student’s future success. Fellow student leaders can be the connection one needs in the future for a wider range of opportunities.

Equally important is the connection that can be made with the professors that are present at these conferences. This is another important part of a college student’s future success. A good professor can open many doors for students and push the student to their full potential.

If you are interested in any of these wonderful opportunities make sure to join AAPS, one of the newest professional chapters at The Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences. Build your networking opportunities while being a pioneer that can shape our new organization. Make the most of your college experience and get involved!
